Brief History  (For the Comprehensive History of Springdale 1787 - 1987, go to History Online)

The City of Springdale was first founded in 1806 as the Town of Springfield. In 1839, the town was officially incorporated as a village under that name. During later years however, the original incorporation was lost and the village was then re-incorporated in 1959 under the name of Springdale. A few years later, in 1971, the village became the City of Springdale .

The City of Springdale is located in northern Hamilton County, approximately twenty miles from downtown Cincinnati. Bisected by I-275 and bordered by I-75, it is the home of a highly developed commercial/industrial community, as well as stable, well maintained residential neighborhoods. The population of the city as of the 1990 census was 10,621, but boasts a daytime population of more than 50,000.

In 1992 the city constructed a new Municipal Building at 11700 Springfield Pike.

Form of Government

The City of Springdale has a Charter form of government. See Home Rule Charter for Springdale, Ohio. It is managed by a City Administrator who is appointed by the Mayor and who serves as the City's Chief Administrative Officer.

The City's electoral process is non-partisan. Under the Charter, the Mayor is Springdale's senior elected official, and serves as the directly elected Chief Executive of the City. Springdale also has an elected Clerk of Council/Finance Director, and a seven member City Council. Three of the members of Council are elected at large, and four are elected from districts. The Council selects a President of Council from its own ranks to preside at meetings.
