WASTE OIL DISPOSAL PROGRAM

EPA statistics show only about 60% of new motor oil sold can be accounted for later in the waste stream.

Where does the other 40% of oil go?

The City of Springdale has arranged to provide you with a proper way to dispose of the waste oil generated when you change the oil in your privately owned vehicles.

This could avoid your oil becoming a threat to our water supply, the community and our environment. We know people would rather not pollute if given another option.

The City has purchased and installed a waste oil burning furnace at the Municipal Garage at 335 Northland Boulevard.

This furnace is designed to safely burn waste oil and, in turn, is used to supplement some of the energy needed to heat the maintenance facility.

ABOUT THE FURNACE

The furnace burns the following oil only:

When operating at full capacity, the furnace generates approximately

200,000 BTU's per hour, while only burning about 1.4 gallons of waste oil.

With a full supply of oil, the furnace will supply the mechanic's work bays in our garage with 2-1/2 months of heat. The furnace has a 300 gallon self contained waste oil tank. When the oil is burned, it is smokeless and meets EPA clean air requirements.

WASTE OIL STORAGE TANKS

We also have two 500 gallon, above ground storage tanks that are inside leak proof concrete containment structures which are covered with a canopy. All these precautions have been taken to avoid oil spills or leaky tanks. The two 500 gallon storage tanks and the 300 gallon self contained storage tank gives us a storage capacity of 1300 gallons of waste oil.

HOW TO DISPOSE OF YOUR WASTE OIL

We only accept oils that our furnace will burn which are:

Bring your waste oil in plastic containers, 5 gallon size or smaller, to the recycle station at 335 Northland Boulevard.

Place your containers in the small steel waste oil cabinet located next to our recycle dumpster. The cabinet is marked with the type of oils we can accept.

If you would like to reuse your container, please mark the container with your name and phone number. We will call you once we have emptied the container. Then we will place it next to the small steel waste oil cabinet for you to pick up.

If you desire additional information, please call 346-5520 between 7:30 AM and 3:00 PM.
