BOARD OF HEALTH MINUTES

NOVEMBER 10, 2005

President Doyle Webster called the Board of Health to order on November 10, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.

The minutes of October 7, 2005 were approved.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Regulation R1-2005

Mrs. Mitrione read Regulation R1-2005 regarding food service fees for the second time.

Health Department By-Laws

Mrs. Mitrione reported the by-laws had been changed to read “members will be paid each month that the Board of Health meets” to be in line with the pay ordinance. Also, there will be an election in January to elect a president pro tem.

NEW BUSINESS

SmokeFreeOhio Campaign

Mrs. Mitrione stated there is a statewide ballot initiative pushing for a Smoke Free Ohio in all work places including bars and restaurants. She said she has talked with Administration and they do not want its own no-smoking ordinance but will go along if it were state-wide. Mrs. Mitrione said many other health departments have already endorsed the campaign. The board voted to endorse the campaign.

HEALTH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

ServSafe

Mrs. Mitrione reported that a ServSafe class was taught in Mandarin Chinese. She said there were sixteen participants and six of them were from Springdale. She said there will be another class in English in January

Pandemic Flu

Mrs. Mitrione said the State of Ohio has finalized its protocol for a pandemic flu outbreak.

Food Sampling Program

Mrs. Mitrione said Ella Jergens developed a handout to give operators after they receive their second sample comes back with high counts. She said if the product is contaminated two times and it is pre-packaged, they would like to get a sample from an unopened package to see if it is contaminated before it gets to the store.

Bedbugs

Mrs. Mitrione said a couple of bugs were sent to the lab for confirmation and they were confirmed as bedbugs.

NURSE’S REPORT

SWIPERS

Ms. Messer said the Health Department did a practice run using the new SWIPERS equipment.

Flu Vaccine

Ms. Messer stated the rest of the flu vaccine finally came in. She said she had to cancel a clinic for this week and the next clinic will be next Thursday. She said she pays 50 cents a dose for vaccine from the State. What she purchased from Besse was over $1,000 for 120 doses.

Home Visits

Ms. Messer said she made 35 home visits to 25 people. She said most of them have diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

Office Visits

Ms. Messer reported that she did 22 blood pressure checks, 8 cholesterol screenings, gave 485 flu shots, did blood pressure checks at the Senior Centers and investigated one communicable disease.
