A 1978 graduate of the University of Cincinnati, John Boertlein began a career in law enforcement that same year when he joined the Covington, KY Police as a patrol officer. As a Covington officer, John became a charter member of the newly formed Covington Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. In 1981, John moved across the Ohio River to join the Cincinnati Police Department. During his tenure with the Cincinnati Police, John performed uniform patrol duties, old clothes “undercover” investigator duties, and detective / investigator functions in Districts Three, Four and the Robbery Task Force. Promoted to Police Sergeant in 1989, John returned to patrol supervisor capacity serving in District Five and District Three before taking over supervisor duties for the department’s Recruiting / Background Investigation Unit and later the Court Property Unit. John is a certified instructor with the Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Association and was a regular instructor at the Cincinnati Police Academy teaching a variety of topics including: “Responding To Crimes In Progress,” “Gangs,” “Community Oriented Policing,” “Firearms Use Decision,” and others. John graduated from the College of Mt. St. Joseph in 1994 with a BA in Communications. He holds graduate hours in Religious & Pastoral Studies from Mt. St Joe and is an ordained minister licensed by the State of Ohio. John retired from the Cincinnati Police in December of 2005. He is a published author and regular contributor to Cincinnati Magazine. His books include: Howdunit: How Crimes Are Committed & Solved (a writer’s guide for factual accuracy in writing crime stories), Today In History: Elvis, and Ohio Confidential: Sex, Scandal, Murder & Mayhem In The Buckeye State. Physically disabled, but with a strong desire to remain a member of the law enforcement community, John joined the Springdale Police Department as a Clerk / Dispatcher in early 2007. He enjoys his place in the Springdale community. John lives in western Hamilton County with his spouse and two children who attend local universities. His hobbies include local history research and “Breweriana,” the study of brewery advertising and history.
